A round table titled “Russian and Iranian cooperation: History and modern period” was held at the Center for Public Diplomacy of Volgograd State University. First-year students of Foreign Area Studies and International Relations educational programs also took part in the round table.
Elena Parubochaya, Associate Professor, PhD in History, Director of the Center for Public Diplomacy, addressed the speakers with a welcoming speech, highlighting the importance of developing cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran at the present stage of changes in the geopolitical environment in the world.
Nikita Piskunov, an expert at the Center for Public Diplomacy, noted that modern Iran-Russia relations have a fairly strong foundation and have been proven by history: “Today it is important to develop partnership with our traditional partners, especially since the Russian Federation and the Islamic Republic of Iran have a mutual interest in expanding cooperation: common views on the current geopolitical situation in the world, the desire to develop interregional ties, the possibility of expanding cooperation in education, science and culture.”
Nikita Piskunov spoke about the history of Iran-Russia relations and about joint efforts of Russia and Iran to ensure regional security in the Central Asian region and the Middle East in the historical retrospect. Special attention was paid to the International North-South Transport Corridor, especially the Caspian part of this route.
“In the context of the development of Iran-Russia trade and economic relations, the International North-South Transport Corridor connecting India and Europe and passing through the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation is of particular importance. The importance of the transport corridor and the economic capacity of the cargo flow can significantly strengthen the economic potential of the Lower Volga region,” Elena Parubochaya, Director of the Center for Public Diplomacy, stressed.
The students had the opportunity to share their view on the development of cultural and humanitarian cooperation between Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as on the prospects for the development of the Iran-Russia dialogue.
